In a world where most people on the planet are not interested in spiritual development, it’s easy to get lost. We find ample support for all of the habits that keep us stuck in low mind states. When something horrible happens, there are lots of people ready to hear our complaints. When the poison of anger fills us, there are lots of people available to justify our rage. When our ego is bruised, others are more than willing to help us eat anther portion of self-pity. We get lost in the world of misery and we forget there is another choice.
We soon find ourselves sinking into salvation mode, feeling like someone needs to save us. But that just keeps us trapped. The truth is no one can save us. The truth is we don’t even need to be saved. We simply forgot who we really are.
We are Light. We are Love. Spiritual development does not change us into something else. It uncovers the Truth of what we already are.
To discover the essence of our Being, we must practice. We must retrain our mind to look for Light, to open to Love. It is very simple; however it is not easy because the responsibility for growth rests entirely within each individual.
WE have to do the work, no one can do it for us.
WE control the focus of our own mind, no one can do it for us.
If you ever feel lost, or if you feel like you are drowning in the world, check in with yourself. The fact that you even noticed something is not quite right is a wonderful accomplishment! Celebrate that awareness and avoid the temptation of beating yourself up by thinking you should know better. Celebrate that your mind state is in the gutter, and then ask yourself some questions.
Give yourself honest answers, and be prepared to take action.
- What are you doing to support your practice?
- Do you belong to a meditation group? Do you have spiritually-oriented friends that you spend time with?
- Do you give yourself time to get out of the city and into nature?
These are very important things we need to do to take care of ourselves in this world. They allow us to reinforce the spiritual connection we have with our deeper Self. While we may find ourselves busy with life, it’s important to live life instead of being dragged along by old habits. Take the responsibility and make the choices that support your own practice and spiritual development. Don’t wait for someone else to tell you what to do. It’s always wonderful to get suggestions and inspiration from others, however you know, deep down, what it is you need to shine.
It’s so easy to forget who we really are. We must constantly remind ourselves of our true nature. We must support our own spiritual practice. We have to remember for ourselves the option of Joy is always right here, right now.
